Elewana Sand River Mara Camp

Located along the banks of a River, the Elewana Sand River Mara Camp is found within Masai Mara National Reserve. The Sand River camp is found strategically located along the migration route where the great wildebeest migration from Serengeti can easily be seen from the camp. Numerous animals can be seen lined up along the banks of the Sand River and since the camp is not fenced, the wildebeests usually walk into the camp including the guests in the magnificent migration without moving an inch. The camp is one of the first accommodation facilities that experience the annual wildebeest migration where millions of wildebeests, and thousands of zebras. and gazelles cross from Tanzania into Masai Mara following the rains and then back to Serengeti when there is a change in the weather patterns.

Accommodation at Sand River Mara Camp

The lodge has 1 family tent with two en-suite bedrooms which are connected by a private lounge, 16 en-suite tented rooms covering 49m, squared and 11 double and 4 twin en-suite rooms. Children of all ages are welcome to the Sand River and facilities that are found within the rooms include mosquito nets, a private deck, hot and cold running water, a fan, a hair dryer, a seating area, a desk, a bathtub, an outdoor shower with hot water and flushing water. The en-suite bathroom in the tents is fitted with a flushing toilet, twin washing basins, a supplementary outdoor shower, toiletries, and hot, and cold running water.

The tents at the camp are exact replicas of the 1920 permanent tented camps and these are divided into two parts adjoined that is 6 and 10 and each of the two parts has its separate, and public and dining areas. some of the key points of staying at the Sand River Camp include the classic and luxurious facilities, the private location offers guests what we can refer to as an exclusive safari, found along the migration route is also a bonus of staying at the sand River and the great view of the Sand River where crowds of animals can easily be seen during the dry season.

The different activities that children get to engage in at the Elewana Sand River Camp include the following:

Board games

Swimming pool

School visits but these are only done during the school terms

Guided bush walks where children get to see the different types of vegetation, bird species, and various types of animals

In warrior training, children get to learn how to make fire, hunt, make arrows and track animals

Children also get to enjoy the children’s menu prepared by well-trained chefs

Food and drinks at the Sand River

Three meals are served per day throughout your stay at the Sand River Camp: Breakfast, lunch, and Dinner. In most cases, the approximate time for serving these meals is as follows unless there is a change and this will be communicated beforehand.

Breakfast:      6:30 to 9:30 am

Lunch:            1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Dinner:           8:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Although many of these meals are served at the dining area that overlooks the River however you can arrange for private and bush dining options with prior communication to the chef and the premium drinks come at an extra cost. If you have any dietary issues, you need to let the camp know in advance so that you are catered for easily.

How to get to Sand River Mara Camp

The best way to get to Sand River is by air as it takes a short time to get there. Fortunately, several charter flights fly from the different airstrips in different parts of the country to Sand River Mara Camp.

Two scheduled flights with safari Link depart from Nairobi Wilson with a two pax minimum at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Private charter flights from all over Kenya can be chartered to Keekorok Airstrip which is 15 minutes when flying and 45 minutes while driving to the Sand River Mara.

Two scheduled flights with Mombasa Air Flight departing from Nairobi Wilson at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to Keekorok airstrip with a minimum of two passengers.

Three flights with Air Kenya Airways depart from Nairobi Wilson at 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 3:15 pm with a minimum of two passengers.

The Sand River Masai Mara Camp is an ideal destination place for tourists looking to enjoy great wildlife viewing. Malaria is common in most parts of Kenya and the same applies to the Sand River Camp but it is low key and to be able to carb it, the tents are specifically sealed, and treated mosquito nets are provided for all guests. We also advise that you come with anti-malarial drugs and insect repellent to keep safe. As for communication, free WIFI is provided to all guests and there is a phone signal as well although it is limited.

The Sand River camp is an anytime safari destination all year round, especially for tourists who love game viewing. The presence of the big cats and then the arrival of the annual wildebeest migration add to the already fun experience.  You will need to however book in advance especially if you are planning on visiting during the peak season (June to September) due to the many crowds of tourists who visit Masai Mara to watch the wildebeest migration.
